报告题目:Big Data Analytics: Current Trend and Research Perspectives

报告人:Michael Rung-Tsong Lyu(吕荣聪)(IEEE Fellow, AAAS Fellow, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Department at The Chinese University of Hong Kong)

Big data analytics is a significant research area in the "big data" era. "Big data" is generally characterized by 4 Vs: volume, variety, velocity, and veracity, which post enormous research challenges in processing, modeling, and analyzing the massive data. In this talk, we describe how big data analytics influence our daily life, and present our new research efforts in big data analytics to attack these research challenges. To address the volume issue, we investigate and compare existing distributed machine learning platforms. To address the variety issue, we explore learning techniques in recommendation systems, and incorporate collaborative filtering, content-based learning, social regularization, collective probabilistic factoring, point-of-interest recommendation, and a combined approach to recommend. To address the velocity issue, we propose online learning for group lasso, online multi-task feature selection, and kernelized online imbalanced learning. The future outlook for big data analytics will also be presented in this talk.

Michael Rung-Tsong Lyu(吕荣聪)is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Department at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the University of Iowa, Bellcore, and Bell Laboratories. His research interests include software reliability engineering, distributed systems, fault-tolerant computing, service computing, multimedia information retrieval, and machine learning. He has published 450 refereed journal and conference papers in these areas. He served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Reliability, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and Journal of Information Science and Engineering. He is currently on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Service Computing and Software Testing, Verification and Reliability Journal. He was elected to IEEE Fellow (2004), AAAS Fellow (2007), and Croucher Senior Research Fellow (2008), and was named IEEE Reliability Society Engineer of the Year in 2010. Prof. Lyu received his B.Sc. from National Taiwan University, his M.Sc. from University of California, Santa Barbara, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of California, Los Angeles.
